Restaurant POS systems in Arkansas: how to pick between them

Two platforms, four questions. Start with how food gets to your guest and the shortlist writes itself, long before anybody mentions screen sizes.

Contactless payment on a counter point of sale terminal

We sell, install, program and support two restaurant POS platforms in Arkansas: Shift4 Dine, called SkyTab until May 2026, and Clover. Shift4 Dine builds online ordering, QR pay, reservations and loyalty into the platform. Clover publishes its package prices and its card rates in the open, and sells through thousands of banks. Your service model picks between them. The logo you have seen most often has nothing to do with it.

Which POS system is right for my restaurant?

Start with how you serve, not with the brand on the box. A full service dining room with servers, coursing and split checks needs table mapping, tableside firing, and handhelds that all talk to each other. A counter operation needs speed at the register, a fast modifier flow, and probably a kiosk conversation. A bar needs tab management with card pre authorization and tabs that reopen fast when the well is three deep. A food truck needs one device that runs on cellular and does not care where you parked it.

Those four descriptions filter harder than any feature grid. Once you know which one you are, Shift4 Dine and Clover separate on two questions. How much is published pricing worth to you, the kind you can check yourself on a Sunday night with a calculator? And how much are you willing to pay to get ordering, QR pay, reservations and loyalty already in the box instead of bolted on one vendor at a time?

There is a third question, and nobody puts it on a website. Who installs it, who programs the menu, and who is standing in your kitchen on go live night. Pick either platform here and the answer does not move. We are.

01Full service diningServers, coursing, split checks, paying at the table.Handhelds and table mapping are not optional. On Clover you need Standard or above, because Starter leaves tableside firing out.
02Quick service and fast casualA counter queue, a lot of tickets, a small average check. The cents per transaction hurt you more than the percentage does. Do the effective rate arithmetic before you sign.
03Bars and nightclubsOpen tabs, card pre authorization, reopening tabs fast at volume. One device per well, plus fixed stations. Closing a tab without leaving the well is the whole point.
04Food trucksOne or two devices, connectivity you cannot count on, no back office.Cellular decides it. A cellular handheld is a whole POS by itself.

What do both systems already do well?

More than either rep will admit, and you should hear it plainly, because both of them will tell you their platform is one of a kind. Both publish online ordering that drops straight into the POS instead of onto a second tablet parked by the expo window. Both publish QR code ordering and payment at the table. Both sell a handheld that runs the full point of sale, the Shift4 Dine Handheld and the Clover Flex. Item and modifier management, split checks and discounts, real time sales reporting, employee logins and permissions, third party delivery integrations: both cover the core of a modern restaurant, and have for years.

So the feature grid is not where your decision lives. A rep walking you line by line through capabilities both platforms shipped years ago is running out the clock on your afternoon.

So what is the real difference between them?

Pricing disclosure, first and sharpest. Clover puts package prices, hardware costs both ways, and card rates of 2.3 percent plus 10 cents card present and 3.5 percent plus 10 cents keyed, right on its website. Shift4 publishes no monthly software figure and no processing rate for Shift4 Dine anywhere on its site. The pricing page advertises getting started for zero dollars and stops there. You can research Clover at your own kitchen table at midnight, and Shift4 you cannot. Weigh that. Nobody selling Shift4 Dine, us included, gets to pretend the gap is not there.

Bundling is the second difference. Shift4's pricing page lists marketing and loyalty, reservations and waitlist, a QR code solution and a website builder as free. Clover's published full service tables include online ordering and QR ordering at every tier, then gate contactless payment and tableside firing by package and by device.

Distribution is third, and owners underrate it every time. Clover sells through Clover Direct plus more than 3,000 financial institution partners, so whoever hands you the contract is also the one who wrote it, and terms swing hard between sellers. Shift4 Dine comes from one company. Fewer variables, one relationship covering platform and processing, and no way to shop the same product for a better deal.

01Published pricingClover publishes packages and card rates. Shift4 publishes neither for Shift4 Dine. You can model Clover before you take a single call. Shift4 needs a written quote before you can compare anything at all.
02Included toolsShift4 lists loyalty, reservations, waitlist, QR and a website builder as free. Clover includes online and QR ordering at every published tier.Add up only what you will switch on in month one. Ignore the rest of the slide.
03ContactlessShift4 publishes NFC and mobile wallets on its Handheld. Clover gates tap by device and package. On Clover, check tap device by device before you pick a package.
04Who sells itClover through 3,000 plus financial institution partners. Shift4 Dine from Shift4.Clover terms change with the seller. Read the agreement, not the brand.
03So what is the real difference between them?

Do I need handhelds, a kitchen display, or both?

Handhelds pay for themselves in dining rooms and bars, where what you are deleting is walking. The walk from table twelve back to the station, forty times a night, four servers deep. In counter service they do far less, because the guest already came to you. Before you buy any, walk your floor with a phone in your hand and confirm wireless reaches every corner of it, patio included. A handheld only works where signal reaches, and Arkansas is full of very good restaurants in buildings nobody designed to carry a 5 gigahertz signal.

Kitchen displays earn their keep when ticket volume turns paper into the bottleneck, or when you are routing to several prep stations at once. Shift4 publishes a KDS at 16 or 22 inches with an optional bump bar. Clover's published restaurant packages list a kitchen printer as an available accessory and no display at all.

Both are separate decisions from the platform choice, and both have their own page on this site. Neither belongs in your restaurant because a package sheet had a box for it.

What should I ask a POS rep, including us?

Five questions. Write the answers down while they talk. What is my effective rate on last month's statement, the real one, not the advertised rate. What is the full fee schedule, every line of it, attached to the quote and not summarized on a call. How long is the term, what does leaving early cost in dollars, and does it renew itself if I do nothing. Who owns the hardware when the term ends, and will it run with another processor. And who physically installs it, who programs the menu, and who is in my building on go live night.

A rep who answers all five without flinching has earned your afternoon. A rep who goes vague on the fee schedule or the termination number has just shown you exactly what month eight will feel like.

Ask us the same five. Judd Alsup leads the Arkansas side, and a real person calls you back within two hours, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm Central.

Straight answer

What a local dealer can change, and what we cannot

Better you hear the edges of our influence now than assume we can fix anything you sign.

What works

  • We program your menu for you, from your real menu, with your real modifier structure and your real tax categories.
  • We install in person and we are in your building on go live night, not on call from a truck somewhere.
  • A real person calls you back within two hours, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm Central.
  • We carry both platforms, so we can tell you when your service model points at the other one.
  • We work out your current effective rate from your own statement before we quote you anything.
  • We break a quote into four separate lines, so you can hold it up next to anyone else's.

What does not

  • We cannot change what a platform does. Clover gates contactless by device, and no dealer alive can waive that for you.
  • We cannot cut your interchange. Nobody can. Markup is the only piece anyone can move, and we will show you ours.
  • We cannot get you out of an existing contract for free. We will read it with you and tell you the number it costs to walk.
  • We are a new business in Arkansas. No decades of history to point at, and we are not going to invent any.
  • Two platforms, not eight. If what your restaurant needs lives somewhere else, we will say so, and you should go buy it there.
  • Vendor level support escalations still run through the vendor. We can push. We cannot rewrite their queue.

Questions restaurant owners ask

Do you only sell one POS system?

No. We carry Shift4 Dine and Clover on purpose. A dealer with one product recommends that product to everybody, including the restaurants it is wrong for. Two platforms means the recommendation can move with your service model, your average ticket, and how you feel about contracts and owning your own hardware.

Which is better, Shift4 Dine or Clover?

Neither, in the abstract, and a rep who answers that in one word is selling. Clover publishes its prices and its card rates, so you can verify and budget on your own. Shift4 Dine puts more tools in the box at no extra software charge and publishes no figures whatsoever. Dining rooms and counter operations tend to land on opposite sides of that, which is why we start with how you serve.

Is SkyTab still a thing?

SkyTab is Shift4 Dine now. Shift4 announced in May 2026 that SkyTab POS would be rebranded, and said there were no changes to products, day to day operations, the software interface, integrations, reporting or support channels. A rep still saying SkyTab is selling you the same platform under the name it wore before May.

Can I mix hardware from both platforms?

No. Each platform runs its own software on its own devices, and Clover states its devices cannot be used with other payment processors. One platform per location. Run several venues with different service models and you can run a different platform per site, but you have doubled your training and your reporting work to do it.

Do you install outside Little Rock?

Yes, we cover Arkansas. We program the menu no matter where you sit, install is in person, training is in person, and we are in the building on go live night. Call from a corner of the state where a same day visit is not realistic and we will tell you on the first call, not after you have signed.
